Babylonstoren
Franschhoek, Western Cape, ZA
A working farm hotel and agricultural estate in South Africa's Franschhoek valley, spanning hospitality, wine, an edible garden, restaurants, spa and retail, with sister estates in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands.
Babylonstoren is a luxury farm hotel and working agricultural estate in the Franschhoek wine valley of South Africa's Western Cape, at the foot of Simonsberg Mountain. Founded in 1692 and relaunched in 2007, it operates across hospitality, wine, agriculture, food and retail on a single estate built around Cape Dutch heritage buildings and a 3.5-hectare edible garden.
The estate's operations span several distinct product lines: the Farm Hotel, with three accommodation types (Farmhouse, Garden Cottages and Fynbos Cottages); a garden holding over 300 edible plant varieties across 15 themed clusters, designed by French architect Patrice Taravella and inspired by medieval cloister gardens; two farm-to-fork restaurants supplied from that garden; a winery producing award-winning wines; a spa; a farm shop; a bakery; and Soetmelksvlei, a restored 19th-century farmyard offering immersive agricultural experiences. Technical domains covered on the estate include viticulture and winemaking, commercial crop cultivation, landscape and garden design, hotel operations, farm-to-fork culinary work, heritage building restoration and spa and wellness.
Each of these lines carries its own audience, product story and seasonality, from wine releases and harvest cycles to hotel packages, restaurant menus and retail goods. The estate is part of a group with three sister estates in the United Kingdom, Italy and the Netherlands, extending its brand footprint across four European and African markets.
Babylonstoren's stated ethos combines farm-to-fork and sustainable agriculture with the preservation of Cape Dutch architecture and immersive guest experiences of agricultural life. More detail is available at babylonstoren.com.
