Trunk Tools, Inc.

Trunk Tools builds an AI platform for construction, using NLP and document AI to answer questions from project documents and automate submittal reviews across 500+ jobsites.

Trunk Tools, Inc. develops an AI platform for the construction industry, which it puts at $13 trillion. Its work sits at the intersection of natural language processing, document AI, information retrieval, machine learning and workflow automation: a field-first system that extracts answers from project documents and automates manual review processes. The engineering challenge is grounded in messy, high-volume construction documentation - specifications, RFIs, drawings and contracts - and in delivering usable output to workers on jobsites rather than in offices.

Two products define the current platform. TrunkText lets construction teams ask questions and receive answers sourced directly from project documents, with responses delivered in under 30 seconds. TrunkSubmittal reviews submittals automatically to flag discrepancies before they turn into rework, and is reported to handle 90% of submittals without manual input. The platform is in use on more than 500 jobsites and covers over $50 billion in construction volume.

The company has raised $70 million, with investors including Insight Partners, Redpoint and Innovation Endeavors. Customers named include Gilbane, Suffolk, Haskell and AMLI. The stated development philosophy is that AI should augment human capability rather than replace workers, and that the right information should reach the right people at the right time; the team combines construction domain expertise with AI engineering. The company was founded by Dr. Sarah Buchner, who began as a carpenter in Austria before completing a PhD in Civil Engineering and Data Science.
