The company was founded in 2020 by co-founder Umaimah Khan and is headquartered in San Francisco.

Opal Security is backed by Greylock, Battery Ventures and Silicon Valley CISO Investments, a CISO-led investor network. In December 2025 Howard Ting joined as chief executive, bringing two decades of security leadership.
